J.P. Morgan has made its dollar-denominated deposit token available to institutional clients on Base, the Ethereum Layer-2 network developed within Coinbase. The November 12 announcement follows a proof of concept introduced in June.
The product uses the JPM Coin name and the JPMD ticker. In its announcement, the bank describes a digital representation of a bank deposit that clients can transfer through compatible wallets on a public blockchain.
The deposit remains the underlying asset
The move extends Kinexys, J.P. Morgan’s blockchain business, beyond its existing private-network deposit account offering. Base supplies a public blockchain environment, while access to the bank’s token remains directed at institutional clients.
That distinction is easy to miss. Availability on a public network does not make the product an unrestricted retail stablecoin. The banking relationship and the token’s permitted users remain part of the service.
J.P. Morgan says B2C2, Coinbase and Mastercard completed issuance and redemption transactions during the proof of concept. It describes near-real-time transfers and around-the-clock settlement as features of the offering.
Those claims concern the participating institutional workflow. They do not establish that any wallet holder can obtain JPMD or redeem it without meeting the bank’s requirements.
Programmable transfers, with institutional access
Clients can use Ethereum Virtual Machine-compatible wallets for peer-to-peer transfers. The bank also says the token is designed for integration with smart contracts, which could support more automated financial workflows.
For a treasury operation, the attraction is a deposit representation that can move within an onchain process instead of requiring each payment instruction to leave that environment. The practical scope still depends on who can participate and how the issuer’s controls are applied.
The announcement does not replace those questions with a general promise of open access. Its confirmed change is narrower and useful: institutional clients have a live deposit-token option on Base following the completed tests.
